Fire Department

There are four fire stations throughout the city. Station I is located at 315 4th Avenue, Station II is at 4911 McClung Street. Station III is at 1112 Weberwood Drive, and Station IV is located at 1103 Jefferson Road. An authorized crew of 40 full-time career firefighters and two part-time paid on-call firefighters serve the South Charleston area.

A three platoon shift system with at least ten firefighters on duty at all times provides round-the-clock overage every day of the year. All full time firefighters have to complete the United States Department of Labor Journeyman Firefighter Program within three years of initial employment. Additionally, every full time firefighter is an Emergency Medical Technician, certified in hazardous materials response, and trained in all areas of rescue.

The fire department not only responds to fires, but many other types of emergencies as well. They are the primary rescue unit called to provide auto accident extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue, high angle rescue, and deal with hazardous material situations. The department responds along with the Kanawha County Ambulance Authority as medical rapid responders, and the engine companies are equipped with heart monitor defibrillators.

South Charleston Fire Department equipment includes four engine companies in service with one reserve engine, a rescue unit, a 55-foot ladder truck, a water rescue truck, a command post trailer, a hazardous materials trailer, a trench rescue trailer, a technical rescue unit, and two swift-water boats that can be placed anywhere that the need arises.

In addition to all of these services, the fire department also offers classes for the general public. Some recently offered classes include CPR, fire extinguisher use, fire safety, first aid, and shelter-in-place. The department maintains an ongoing relationship with area industrial companies and businesses through on-site training in local plants. Businesses are also encouraged to join the Kanawha Valley Life Safe Program, which provides fire inspections, fire warden and employee training.
